Farmers at Heart

Well we’ve started our first official garden. We had a pseudo-garden last year with pumpkins and sunflowers, however two hurricanes and millions of squash bugs ruined our grandiose visions of green thumb hall of famers.

My wife and I are wired a bit differently. She can see what things can be and I can see what it’ll take to get there. She is the dreamer and I’m the dream crusher.

Let’s start a garden she says…

It’ll be fun she says…

It can’t be that hard she says…

It’s amazing how a small patch of dirt can bring you to your knees quickly and frequently. After spending 10+ hours “getting the soil ready”, driving a trailer to pick up the smelliest compost we could find, reading all these instructions about how far things need to be planted and how to make rows and how to water and when to water and how to prune and how to trellis and what to use to trellis and sweat, sweat, sweat…EASY PEASY

We have a garden, it’s growing, it’s greener than it started. We’ve tried everything from “Florida Weave’ trellising techniques to old fashioned t-posts and cattle fencing and hopefully it’ll hold up. I should probably be more concerned with it having something to hold up before making that assumption.

Y’all - we have a garden. That’s all. We’ll keep you posted with growth and lessons learned.
